Honoring the Super-Human Work of Nurses
The DAISY Award honors the super-human work nurses do for patients and families every day, wherever they practice, in any role they serve and throughout their careers.
The DAISY Award was created in honor of Patrick J. Barnes, who received treatment here at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, and was so moved by the care of our exceptional nurses, the DAISY Foundation was formed. The DAISY Award is now celebrated all over the country, in partnership with over 4,500 health care facilities to provide ongoing recognition of the clinical skill and especially the compassion nurses provide to patients and families all year long.
About the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses
Who is eligible for the DAISY Award?
Any nurse (RN) who is in good-standing with their health care organization is eligible for a DAISY.
Who can submit a nomination?
Anyone is welcome to submit a nomination — patients, family members, co-workers, physicians — anyone who experiences or observes extraordinary compassionate care being provided by a nurse.
How are the winners chosen?
All nominations will be sent to the DAISY Committee, compromised of one nursing supervisor for each nursing department. This Committee normally convenes once every quarter to vote on the nominations. The nominations are made anonymous prior to voting, so that the gender and name of the nominee is unknown to the Committee members. Likewise, the Committee members are not informed of who voted for which candidate. The program is facilitated by the DAISY Coordinator within Clinical Operations.

DAISY Award Recipients
What kind of nursing inspired the DAISY Award?
Nurses who were patient, who listened, who translated a doctor’s words. That kind of care, that kind of time, that human connection is what inspired the DAISY Award.

Gloria Hernandez, RN, BSN, OCN
“Gloria is a truly amazing nurse and coworker. She goes above and beyond to help her patients. She is always full of compassion, and makes sure patients have the care they need. She is always willing to help and is an amazing resource who is full of knowledge. I am extremely lucky to work in the same office with her.”

Sunny Jones, BSN, RN, OCN
“Sunny is beyond exceptional. Sunny has always gone above and beyond to care for her patients. She has an incredible work ethic, never saying "is this my job" but instead is always willing to help out for the better of the patients and her team. Sunny is always "sunny", she is there when your spirits need lifted or if you just need to talk. Sunny is more than deserving of this award!”
Eva Philippe, RN, CWON
“Eva has consistently shown unwavering compassion and patience taking care of complex wounds and complex patients. She sees patients who are often in poor socioeconomic situations and gives them dignity through the way she cares for them. She is perfect for her role and has made such a profound difference in her patients' lives!”
Patrick Buxton, RN
“I am a physician treating AML/MDS/MPN. Patrick has been my primary clinical nurse coordinator since he came to the SCCA/FHCC in 2021. He truly has been the best nurse I have worked with in my 10 years here spanning almost 10 nurses. He is compassionate towards patients and goes above and beyond to help them—be it spending hours on the phone with insurance companies to get drugs approved or making sure the local lab has the correct orders to save them travel to Seattle. Patients are constantly praising him to me (and one even compared him to a “demi-god”).”
Sarah Kimbrough, MSN, RN, OCN
“Sarah and her project management group have done an exceptional job leading our team of clinical leaders to not only imagine but operationalize new ways of providing patient focused care. Her dedication to the Fred Hutch has been apparent in the myriad meetings she facilitated with multidisciplinary teams to work through barriers and find innovative solutions in advance of the opening of Building 2.”
Kimberly Nichols, LPN
“Kimberly is an amazing LPN and asset to the Alliance Lab team. She is positive and supportive of her co-workers and patients. Always a knowledgeable resource, she loves to teach staff new skills and is a great go-to person for questions and help. Our department wouldn't be the same without Kimberly's dedication, hard work and caring attitude.”
Zulma Rosado, BSN, RN
“Scared, nervous and anxious, I walked into the clinic for a blood draw the day before my first chemotherapy infusion. This is when I first met Zulma who quickly put me at ease and successfully and painlessly did the first blood draw using my port. She told me she also works in the infusion center and would look for me at my first chemo infusion. The next day, I was a ball of nerves waiting to be called into the infusion clinic. When I saw Zulma's smiling face behind her mask, I was instantly comforted seeing a familiar face. Zulma was my oncology nurse for all of my 16 treatments. She helped make the process easier with her amazing nursing care, positive energy, helpful tips, pep talks and fun chats.”
Overlake Nursing Staff
The nurse team at Overlake deserves a Daisy Award for their outstanding dedication, compassion, and excellence in patient care. They consistently go above and beyond in their roles to ensure that patients receive the highest quality of care and feel supported throughout their health care journey. They are attentive to patients' needs, responsive to their concerns and provide education and guidance to patients and their families.
Greg Cunningham, MSN, RN, CCRN
"While I was going through this difficult time, Greg was very polite and lighthearted. He made therapy easier and was attentive to our wants and needs. He explained everything he was doing and answered all the questions we had. Thank you for making our experience all the better."
Jeanette Lawson, RN, OCN
"Jeanette is the hardest working nurse that I've ever come across. Her tenacity, attention to detail and compassion inspire me to be a better nurse every day. She goes above and beyond for not only her patients but for her coworkers as well. She is someone that many nurses go to for advice, support and guidance. Her passion for her work at Fred Hutch is contagious and that enthusiasm creates such a productive working environment. I know that I can speak for the rest of infusion to say that we are so lucky that she works with us."
Patrick Evans, RN, BSN
"Patrick is an extraordinary leader. His leadership style embodies authenticity, transparency, and kindness. He has taken major strides to make his nurses feel heard and supported. Patrick makes himself readily available to his staff - enforcing an open-door policy and quickly adapting to the pressing needs of the unit. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of a DAISY Award than Patrick Evans."
Jodie David, RN, CHPN, OCN, NC-BC
"Jodie is able to meet with the patient where they are at and then partner with them to better their care. She is an advocate for all patients and routinely uses creative thinking to find ways to help. This nurse is an amazing communicator. I have learned so much from her expertise and caring attitude. Not only does she bring a high level of care to patients, but she also cares for any staff that walks in the door."
Claire Kellogg, BSN, RN
"From the first visit, Claire made me feel comfortable. She cares for her patients as though we are family. She has been my nurse a couple of times for hydration during my chemo. I know it’s her job to make me comfortable, but it’s more than that. My movements regularly cause the monitor to beep, and every time, even within minutes of each other, she is kind and happy to help. I would request this nurse every visit to Fred Hutch if I could."
Jim Clark, BSN, RN, OCN
"Jim is professional, very knowledgeable and always takes time to chat even though at times it is extremely busy. He makes my wife and I feel like we’re the only patients he has. As medical professionals ourselves, this is a hard task to pull off. His caring and appropriately humorous attitude helps get me through difficult days. Laughter is sometimes the best medicine. My wife and I would like this nurse to be recognized for this award. He is a wonderful RN!"
Christine Westby, BSN, RN
“Christine has been a dedicated nurse with the GI team for many years now. Patients constantly comment on how prompt she replies to calls, with thorough and helpful counseling. They know, just as I do, that if they need help between appointments, you can count on Christine to be there. She puts patients at ease and will always make sure that patients get the care they need, no matter how complicated the request. She is a thoughtful team member, bringing humor, compassion, and expertise to her team, just as she does for her patients. Christine is an unsung hero of GI oncology and we are lucky to work alongside her!”
Luningning Mayor-Talmadge, RN, OCN
“Lu is the backbone of the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU). In the five years I’ve been at SCCA, Lu has been involved in training every staff member (nurse, nursing assistant and PA-C) who has worked in CTU. She has been instrumental in improving our staffing ratios and fighting for what’s best for both patients and staff.”
Molly Taylor, RN
“Molly Taylor, RN, has been providing expert, kind, patient and individualized care for me during my lung cancer journey. She takes the trouble to get to know her patients and can gently remind me of different ways to control my pain and shortness of breath that have worked in the past when I am frightened. Pain has been a serious problem for me, and Ms. Taylor has always been able to bring in the right resources and people to control my pain and lesson distress. She is willing to talk to me about anything that is bothering me, and her advice has helped me find meaning in a difficult and often lonely experience (my husband died of cancer in 2019, also a patient of Palliative Care).”
Diana Su, MN, RN, OCN
“Diana is an overall amazing supervisor. The amount of attentiveness and transparency to her staff is above and beyond. She is accommodating and understanding to her staff's needs and creates a sense of importance to her staff's mental wellbeing. When an issue is brought up, it is always tended to. Her positivity and upbeat personality is refreshing and creates a great work environment.”
Sharon Selby, RN
“Sherry has been such an incredible nurse to work with. She is fiercely dedicated to her patients and her practice. I never second guess that she isn't on top of all her tasks and she probably knows her patients better than she knows herself! We make a rockstar team together in rapid responses and I'm grateful to have her on my team!”
DAISY Team Winner: Fred Hutch at EvergreenHealth
“As I reflect on my time spent at Fred Hutch, I realize how much the staff did to instill in us students a deeper confidence in ourselves. I find myself at a loss for words as I try to narrow down all of the incredible experiences, I had at Fred Hutch. From the lab to the clinic, from Rad-Onc to Infusion, and all the other fantastic opportunities like genetics, research, classes, and lunch and learns. The patience my nurses had with me was unending and at every turn there was a new exciting learning opportunity or moment of reflection. Every nurse I worked with embodied the ideal nurse I strive to become.”
DAISY Team Winner: Fred Hutch at UW Medical Center - Northwest
“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity I had in the lab. You helped me feel confident in my skills and challenged me. You helped me see that being hard on yourself is not the answer to mistakes but rather learning from them and also being kind to yourself. I felt so much growth during my experience in the lab and that wouldn’t have been possible without your patience and support!”
Isela Chrietzberg, BSN, RN, OCN
"Isela is whip-smart and an amazing patient advocate. She shows up for colleagues as a resource and team player. Isela is the kind of nurse I would trust to care for my own family and friends. She deserves some recognition for her amazing work ethic, willingness to step in, and deep commitment to her patients."
Geta Moldovan, RN
"Geta is one of the pillars of the Apheresis Unit. She is a strong nurse with vast depth of knowledge and experience. She is dependable and someone you can always count on, whether it's signing up to help out on a busy weekend, working extra on a short-staffed day or helping a new RN perform an uncommon therapeutic apheresis procedure in the middle of the night. She is a role model in her fortitude and dedication to her work."
Tammy Evans, RN, HP (ASCP)
"I am thankful to work with Tammy as my nurse for my doctor. She is so caring about every single one of our patients. She goes out of her way to check on folks, ensure they are getting the care they need, follows up on resources and care plans. Our patients and providers are so lucky to have her on the team!"
Katie Swartz, RN
"Katie is kind, compassionate, patient, funny, and wicked smart. She excels at triage, is always asking how she can help, never backs down from a challenge, and makes the lives of our patients (and the rest of us) better with every interaction with her. Her unflagging enthusiasm and cheerful, warm spirit puts a smile on everyone's face, even on the toughest days. I am so glad I get to work with Katie!"
Hannah Huebner, RN, OCN
"Ms. Huebner has demonstrated compassion, willing to explain the medical procedures and has listened with empathy. When problems happened, she was instrumental in making changes. For 34 years, I have worked with nurses in a professional capacity and longer as a consumer of health care. Ms. Huebner stands out for her empathy, patient care and excellence."
