Biostatistics

An Integral Role in Groundbreaking Research

Statistics and mathematics are critical to the integrity of scientific research, affecting everything from the design of clinical trials and observational studies to data management and epidemiological modeling. At Fred Hutch, our statistical experts and data scientists are involved in major studies and projects from start to finish, whether it’s to model the spread of HIV or support genomic research.

Fred Hutch also serves as the statistical and data management center for several collaborative national and international research networks, including ones that focus on HIV/AIDS vaccine development, biomarkers for early detection of cancer, and other diseases. Our statisticians and data scientists help design experimental protocols, develop innovative statistical methods for data analysis, and collect, analyze and interpret study data.

Concentrations of Biostatistics Expertise

Within the Public Health Sciences Division, the Biostatistics Program applies statistics and mathematical principles to analyze biological and genetic data and evaluate diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive methods and practices. Projects in this interdisciplinary division span epidemiology, nutrition, genomics, behavioral science, health economics, health disparities, health communications, primary care and oncology. The program’s statisticians also work with scientists in other Fred Hutch divisions.

The Clinical Biostatistics group within Fred Hutch’s Clinical Research Division is a team of biostatisticians that works with investigators to design and analyze data from clinical trials and observational studies. Areas of research include bone marrow and stem cell transplantation, infectious diseases, rheumatology, solid tumor biology, and genomics and cancer survivorship.

The Biostatistics, Bioinformatics and Epidemiology group provides statistical and mathematical modeling expertise to Fred Hutch’s Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division. The group’s 30-plus faculty model epidemics, research statistical methods to design complex global clinical trials, and analyze biological assays to better understand infectious disease processes and immune responses. They frequently develop novel mathematical approaches to better answer scientific questions that emerge from ongoing studies.

SCHARP

Clinical Trials

Our biostatisticians have deep expertise in the design and analysis of clinical trials and have been involved in trials of cutting-edge vaccines, therapies and procedures in areas ranging from stem cell transplantation to rheumatology and dozens of types of cancer.

Data Management for Collaborative Research Networks

Fred Hutch provides coordination and data management for several major national and international research networks and initiatives. They include the Early Detection Research Network, a national network that develops, evaluates and validates biomarkers for early detection of cancer and risk assessment for cancer; the Women’s Health Initiative, a 15-year, multimillion-dollar study of postmenopausal women; the HIV Vaccine Trials Network, the world’s largest publicly funded collaboration to develop a vaccine for HIV/AIDS; and the SWOG Statistics and Data Management Center (SDMC) which provides state-of-the-art statistical and data management expertise for the effective design, conduct and reporting of clinical trials.
