Clinical Pathology

Comprehensive Diagnostic Pathology Services

The Pathology Department provides comprehensive diagnostic pathology services and carries out research involving the hematopoietic stem cell transplant population of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. This includes pre-transplant patients, patients undergoing treatment currently and those in the long-term follow-up phase of treatment. Four pathologists from the Fred Hutch Clinical Division provide the interpretation and review of pathological material from Fred Hutch patients in the outpatient clinics at Fred Hutch, the Fred Hutch adult inpatient population at the UW Medical Center - Montlake, and the Fred Hutch pediatric inpatient population at Seattle Children’s. In addition, the four pathologists serve as consultants for other institutions worldwide by reviewing outside pathology cases. Services available through this laboratory include surgical pathology, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, special stains and in-situ hybridization. Fred Hutch pathologists also perform autopsies for adult and pediatric Fred Hutch patients at UW Medical Center - Montlake.

Clinical Care at Fred Hutch

Another role of the four pathologists associated with clinical care at Fred Hutch is their involvement in numerous research studies in the area of pathology of hematopoietic stem cell hematopoietic stem cell transplant transplants. This frequently involves collaboration with other members of the clinical faculty.

In addition, the Fred Hutch Pathology Department accessions Fred Hutch outpatient cytology and solid tissue tumor specimens for oncology patients, and prepares those specimens for transport to Harborview Medical Center and UW Medical Center - Montlake, respectively, for interpretation and storage at those facilities.
