SciEd Educational Experiences

Fred Hutch Cancer Center is dedicated to advancing research and finding innovative solutions to combat cancer and related diseases. As part of our commitment to education and community engagement, we are thrilled to offer a diverse range of opportunities for both in-person and virtual visits. Our goal is to provide students, schools, and community groups with unique insights into the world of cancer research and prevention. In this section, you will find detailed information on the various ways you can engage with us. We understand the importance of fostering curiosity and knowledge about cancer research, and we have established clear guidelines to ensure your visit is both informative and safe. Explore the possibilities that await you at Fred Hutch!

To initiate the process please click our request form below. Completing this form does not guarantee your request will be fulfilled. Our team will check the availability of your request and reply with instructions on how to secure your request. Requests must be submitted at least 30 calendar days in advance of requested date(s).

*Please note: Our training labs are currently undergoing renovation and our ability to schedule visitors to the training labs may be impacted.*

Guidelines for In-Person Visits

  • Requests may be scheduled between 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
  • Individuals participating in on-campus training lab activities must be at least 10 years of age.
  • We recommend limiting in-person visits to 32 guests. Our training labs can accommodate a maximum of 16 guests.
    • Chaperones-For groups with minors, we require one (1) adult for every ten (10) minors.
  • All required paperwork must be submitted at least 3 business days prior to your confirmed visit.
     

Available Experiences

At Fred Hutch, we offer a wide variety of experiences. These experiences include:

Campus Tour

Designed for individuals who are interested in learning more about Fred Hutch as one of 53 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer research centers, our 5 scientific divisions, and various career opportunities.  

Minimum of 45 minutes

Lab Tour

Designed for individuals who are interested to meet with our scientists and gain firsthand insights into groundbreaking research currently underway.

Minimum of 45 minutes

Scientific Career Panel

Designed for individuals who are interested in learning more about careers at Fred Hutch, including scientific, clinical, and administrative careers. Individuals will hear from Fred Hutch workforce members who are in different stages of their training and/or careers. They will answer questions, share what inspired them to pursue current positions, and discuss educational backgrounds and prior experiences that got them to where they are today.  

Minimum of 60 minutes

Non-Lab Hands on Activity

Designed to provide individuals with STEAM hands-on activities. Example: ArtLab

Minimum of 60 minutes

Hutch Training Lab Hands on Activity

Designed to provide individuals with hands-on laboratory experiences. Requesters can select from several laboratory activities linked to immunotherapy, infectious diseases, or gene editing, including ELISA, white blood cell isolation, gel electrophoresis, or PCR.  Visitors must be dressed appropriately to work in a laboratory, including ankle-length clothes and closed-toe shoes. 

Minimum of 120 minutes

Scientific Presentation

Designed to introduce individuals to various scientific fields and areas of research, to include a Q&A portion.

Minimum of 60 minutes

Hutch Volunteer

Scientific Volunteer for an Off-Campus Event

Designed to provide support with educational events and community initiatives. 

At this time, we cannot accommodate Career Fair requests

Lunch With a Scientist

Designed to provide individuals an insider’s glimpse into the lives of Fred Hutch scientists and their research. We recommend allotting at least 35 minutes.

Virtual Options

We offer a variety of virtual options. Hutch@Home Virtual Field Trips give students and community members a look into different labs at the Hutch, their research, and the people who do the research. We also offer a virtual Campus Tour. To request a virtual speaker for a group or classroom, contact ggoode@fredhutch.org.
