Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Fred Hutch) and the University of Washington (UW) Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology are jointly recruiting a full-time advanced fellow at the Research Associate/Acting Instructor level. This is a full-time, 12-month service period, annual appointment. The primary appointment will be in the Clinical Research Division of Fred Hutch.

This is a year-long fellowship program with the goal of becoming an expert in BMT and immunotherapy. Rotations will include outpatient and inpatient BMT (autologous and allogeneic, long-term follow-up, etc.) and immunotherapy services. The fellow will initially function as a primary provider with direct patient care responsibilities and will have increasing levels of clinical team leadership over the course of the year. Approximately 8 months will be devoted to clinical activities with the remaining time available for clinically focused research projects.

Overview:

Fred Hutch is seeking applications for the 7th Annual Dr. Eddie Méndez Scholar Award, which recognizes outstanding postdoctoral fellows from any discipline conducting research on cancer, infectious diseases, or basic science. The award was created to recognize Dr. Méndez’s commitment to cancer research and supporting early-career scientists from historically excluded backgrounds. This award aims to build a community between postdoctoral scholars seeking academic faculty careers and scientists at Fred Hutch.

This award recognizes the achievements of post-doctoral fellows from backgrounds that are underrepresented in science based on the NIH definition, which includes individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups (Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders), individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. We acknowledge that not all groups historically excluded from science are within the NIH definition and have expanded eligibility to also include scientists who are LGBTQ , formerly incarcerated, and more. A selection committee consisting of Fred Hutch faculty will select up to eight awardees. Fred Hutch will provide an honorarium to awardees, and Fred Hutch will cover all expenses related to travel and accommodations.

Awardees will present at a scientific symposium honoring Dr. Eddie Méndez and have the opportunity to meet with Fred Hutch faculty and senior leaders. We will hold this event in person on the Fred Hutch campus in Seattle in July 16-17th 2025.

The aims of this award are to:

1.                Network with peer/near peers (the cohort) and Fred Hutch staff & faculty

2.                Share your science and have achievements recognized by the FH community

3.                Provide awardees with info about FH as a prospective faculty and/or open the door for future collaborations

 

Dr. Méndez, who died of cancer in 2018, specialized in treating head-and-neck cancer, an often disfiguring and debilitating disease. It was his mission to save lives and improve the well-being of cancer patients, whether through spearheading minimally invasive robotic surgery for these tumors (he was the first in Washington state to perform such surgery) or tirelessly developing new treatments in his laboratory at Fred Hutch.

Mahan Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Herbold Computational Biology Program of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Fred Hutch) in Seattle, Washington invites applications for the Mahan postdoctoral fellowship. The fellowship will provide an exceptional individual with an early start on their career as an independent scientist by providing a 21-month stipend to pursue their proposed research project in the laboratory of a Fred Hutch Computational Biologist mentor.

Faculty of any discipline from the Fred Hutch or University of Washington (UW) may be proposed as mentors, but UW faculty who plan to mentor must co-mentor with a Fred Hutch faculty member. The project must be focused on a topic of biological interest, must involve a computational or mathematical component, and may include an experimental component. A laboratory trained scientist may satisfy the computational and mathematical requirement by including a training component in their proposal. Computationally strong candidates may include a laboratory training component as well. The research direction should reflect the interests and ideas of the applicant, although the final research proposal may be jointly designed; see Additional Information for more details on the application process and for a list of potential mentors.

Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)/Immunotherapy Fellow

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Fred Hutch) and the University of Washington (UW) Department of Pediatrics, Division of Hematology Oncology are jointly recruiting a full-time Bone Marrow Transplant/Immunotherapy Fellow with an appointment as Acting Instructor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine. This is a full-time, 12-month service period, annual appointment. The primary appointment will be in the Clinical Research Division of Fred Hutch.

The selected individual for the advertised position is expected to participate in a year-long fellowship program with the goal of becoming an expert in pediatric hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) and Immunotherapy. This position will rotate through outpatient HCT services (autologous and allogeneic transplant, immunotherapy, Long Term Follow Up) and on the inpatient transplant service initially as a primary care provider with increasing levels of independent patient care responsibility over the course of the year. Exposure to some of our unique clinical programs, including non-malignant transplantation, high risk leukemia, and survivorship, will be part of the learning experience as well. Approximately 60-75% of the year will be devoted to clinical activities with the remaining time available for the opportunity to participate in research projects, which will be determined based on identification of mentors and projects. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.
