Global Oncology at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, in partnership with the University of Washington School of Medicine, the Uganda Cancer Institute, the Government of Uganda, Mulago Hospital, and Makerere University, today announced the launch of a new model for global oncology training: the East African Adult Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program.
After a decade of bringing Ugandan physicians to Seattle for training, this new program will bring Fred Hutch and UW Medicine oncologists to the UCI in Kampala, Uganda, to train the next generation of East African oncologists.
This new initiative will improve the care and treatment of adults with cancer and blood disorders while building health care worker capacity and fostering the cross-sector collaboration essential to strengthening health systems.
Fred Hutch President and Director Dr. Gary Gilliland and Dr. Nancy Davidson, senior vice president and director of the Clinical Research Division and Endowed Chair for Breast Cancer Research at Fred Hutch expressed their support in a video presented to those attending an event marking the program's launch today in Kampala.
“We are proud to say that together with our Ugandan colleagues, we have trained a critical mass of experts in Uganda, and we are now in a position to reverse this model,” Gilliland said.
Davidson, who also heads the Division of Medical Oncology at UW School of Medicine, also underscored the fellowship program’s commitment to oncology training: “With the support of Fred Hutch, we are proud to participate in this new model for global oncology training that will enable direct training of East African physicians in Uganda by University of Washington and Fred Hutch oncologists and faculty.”
