Portrait of Kari Thorsen, MS, CGC.

Cancer genetic counseling has been of interest to me because during an unimaginable time of uncertainty and worry for families, genetic testing is another path one can take to provide valuable knowledge for themselves and family members. I began my career at Fred Hutch in the summer of 2023. I feel extremely fortunate to be part of the clinical genetics team and have the pleasure of seeing patients at both the South Lake Union Clinic and at Fred Hutch at EvergreenHealth in Kirkland.

Working with patients is very fulfilling because I can help provide reassurance and answers regarding cancer risks, prevention and surveillance. I also have an interest in raising access and awareness to genetic testing for adopted individuals.

Outside of work, I enjoy long, scenic walks, podcasts, reading and jigsaw puzzles.

Patient Care Philosophy

I want patients to know that their visit with me is not only about genetic testing consent. I hope to create a safe and supportive environment for all to express their concerns, goals and emotions as they face a cancer diagnosis or work toward learning their cancer risks. My clinical approach is to provide genetic counseling with cultural humility and consideration of the many identities and values a patient holds.
