Mercy Laurino, MS, CGC, PhD

Portrait of Mercy Laurino, MS CGC, PhD.

I began my journey at Fred Hutch in 2010 when I was hired as the clinic coordinator for the prevention clinics. Since then, I've had the privilege and honor of actively contributing to the expansion of Fred Hutch’s genetic counseling, prevention and high-risk clinical services. Today, I proudly serve as the director of these programs.

I primarily see patients at Fred Hutch Cancer Center – South Lake Union, with a focus on our high-risk hematology patients. Additionally, I offer support in other genetic counseling clinical services when needed.

I decided to become a genetic counselor over 20 years ago because of my deep fascination with genetics and my desire to help individuals and families navigate complex medical information. In 2018, I had the opportunity to share my journey and passion for this field during an interview with CityStream: Genetic Counseling. My commitment extends beyond my local community. I am dedicated to improving access to quality genetic counseling services worldwide and am actively involved with the genetic counseling training program in the Philippines.

Collaborating with patients and their family members is my constant heartbeat reminder of why I chose this professional career. It is my privilege to have an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in their lives and the lives of their family members. Each interaction serves as a poignant reminder of why I chose this profession.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends. Exploring new destinations and cuisines through travel brings me boundless joy and fulfillment.

"I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each of our patients. Thank you for placing your trust in us as we work together in the realm of cancer prevention, early detection, treatment and cure. Your trust and partnership are invaluable, and we are committed to providing you with the highest quality of care and support."

Patient Care Philosophy

“Choice” – My approach to patient care centers around the principle of empowerment through choice. In the face of a cancer diagnosis, patients often find themselves swept up in a whirlwind of medical appointments and procedures. I encourage patients and their families to pause and reflect at each juncture, fostering a sense of ownership over their health care decisions – even in situations of choosing when they would like to know if they have a hereditary cancer condition. By actively engaging in shared decision-making with their care team, patients can navigate their care with greater confidence and empowerment.

I want our patients to understand that I deeply value their questions, as they serve as a catalyst for my own professional growth and development. Each inquiry provides valuable insight into what matters most to them and their families, guiding me in tailoring our care approach to best meet their needs.
