I began working with Fred Hutch patients at Swedish Hospital in the mid-1990s during an internship for my master’s program at Seattle University. When the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance was formed, I moved to UW Medical Center - Montlake and continued working with Catholic patients. Now, I work primarily at UW Medical Center - Montlake and occasionally come to the South Lake Union Clinic.
I am in awe of the courage and strength of our patients as they face the unknowns of chemotherapy, the transplant process and their mortality. It’s been a great honor to be welcomed into their lives during such a tender time.
Besides offering patients a compassionate listening presence, I also represent a connection to their Catholic faith, offering the Eucharist, blessings and other familiar prayers as well as working through any questions they have about the Catholic religion. I see my visits as giving patients a reprieve from the intensity of being in the sick world and serving as a reminder that they are held in the prayers of the larger Catholic community.
In my free time, I enjoy working in my garden, doing yoga, walking and appreciating the gifts of my five adult children and eight grandchildren.
Patient Care Philosophy
My focus in my work with patients is to guide them in discovering the healing that is within them by helping them name the things that bring them meaning and hope. I have an affirming approach, normalizing their feelings as well as acknowledging what they bring of themselves to aid them as they cope with their disease and treatment.
