“I understand on a personal level what it’s like to have and fight cancer. There are a lot of what-ifs and figuring out next steps and how you go on, because life is not the same.”

— Barbara

What brought you to oncology and what is your goal for patient care?

I wanted to do something new, and I felt like oncology was a natural calling because of my personal experiences. My goal is to bring something positive to cancer survivors to help them feel better about themselves and what they're going through — to empower them. I want to listen and be that person who truly understands.

What drew you to Fred Hutch?

My own experience as a patient at Fred Hutch was amazing. When I walked into the room, my specialist knew my records and my story. They went the extra mile by reevaluating my slides and pathology. I knew it would continue to be a great experience from that moment. They were so thorough, and everyone cares and has the same mission. We all want to do our very best for patients. I'm honored to play a part.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Survivorship

I am a certified physician assistant who sees patients at the South Lake Union Clinic.

I provide care in the Survivorship Clinic and see patients who have completed treatment and moved into surveillance of their condition or who are past surveillance and are now trying to figure out how to live their best life after treatment. I am really into patient advocacy and making sure everyone has what they need after they have had cancer.

I used to own my own practice in Arizona. I have a good memory for people’s stories, and I even wrote a book about my own experience with melanoma.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
