What is your role as a hematologist?

I take into account my patients’ preferences and values in the decisions we make about how to manage their problem or their disease. I also inform them of the best available evidence relevant to their clinical decision-making. In addition to teaching my patients, I mentor and teach students and senior trainees. I like that they question the dominant paradigm and ask questions like, "Why do we do it like this?" When I don't have a good answer to that question, then it usually becomes the subject of a potential research study.

Why are clinical trials important?

Clinical trials are the comparison of two treatment options to determine which one is either safer, more effective or both. Without patients’ participation, we would not be able to move research forward. Patients participate in clinical trials because they want to help future patients in their situation, so we can make the diagnosis and treatment of blood clots even better than it is today.

I've been invited to help develop international clinical practice guidelines for the treatment and prevention of thrombosis. With both the American Society of Hematology and the American College of Chest Physicians, I’ve been involved in the development of guidelines that are used by physicians all over the world to help them make decisions about how to take care of their patients.
