Surgery

“Most people are quite anxious when they’re coming to meet me, so I try to be a calming presence and give them the information they need in a way that responds to where they are emotionally.”

— Dr. Marchiano

What do you value most about your work?

I like being a part of a strong team that works across disciplines to deliver high-quality care to patients. Cancer is a multidisciplinary disease, so this kind of environment is essential. We also have the opportunity to be a part of training the next generation of physicians, and that provides me a lot of satisfaction, too.

Many of the cancers I treat are relatively rare, and there are only a few clusters in the U.S. where you can access all of the experts in the field. I am very proud to be a part of one of them.

Why should a patient receive care at Fred Hutch?

Everyone who works here has dedicated our lives to this work of treating and curing cancers, and you’ll see this everywhere you go, from the people who greet you in the parking deck all the way through check-in and with your care team. It’s not just a job. We all really focus ourselves to make sure patients with cancer have what they need.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Head and neck cancers

I am an otolaryngologist and head and neck surgeon who sees patients at Fred Hutch at UW Medical Center – Montlake.

I was not somebody who always knew this was what I was going to do. I realized as a trainee that I wanted to be there for patients in their most difficult times and to be available for them while they are going through treatment. There are so many interesting directions you can go in medicine, but being there for patients was my motivation.

I try to be straightforward and forthcoming and a calming presence. Many of these cancers are very visible, and there is a very high incidence of depression among patients, so I try to be very aware of this and track their mental health throughout the process. I can’t allay all fears of what is about to happen, but I can help patients feel confident they are in the right place.
