Surgery

Reconstructive Surgery

“My approach to care is collaborative. I do everything I can to help patients understand the situation and that we’re facing it together. I focus on what I can offer them, and I take pride in the final result that the patient will live with for the rest of their life. In the end, I want to make the patient feel comfortable in their own skin, to have them feel that I’ve given them back a piece of themselves that was taken by cancer or disease. My goal is for them to return to thinking about their family, job or hobbies, having forgotten about the surgery they had because it blends into the background of their life. I want to have 100 percent of their trust that I’m going to do everything I can to get them to their goal. ”

— Dr. Stein

Why did you decide to specialize in plastic and reconstructive surgery?

I was drawn to plastic and reconstructive surgeries because I had an interest in a hands-on, procedural approach to surgery. Plastic surgeons are able to be creative, tailoring our work to our patients’ needs. Other surgical specialties allow for less creativity as there is often only one correct method or technique for completing an operation. Breast reconstruction is a more collaborative decision-making process with the patient, rather than following a set of rules and instructions. We can give patients options so that they can choose what’s best for them.

Of all the cancer treatment centers, why should a patient trust Fred Hutch and your team with their care?

All Fred Hutch providers, from nurses to APPs to physicians, are here for the right reason; we’re interested in being part of a team that delivers exceptional patient care. I have seen countless examples of providers going above and beyond for their patients because they truly care. My colleagues and I strive for the highest quality patient experience and I think that shows from the moment a patient begins their journey at Fred Hutch.
