“My goal is to make medical care approachable and accessible for everyone and to make a seemingly impossible journey seem possible.”

— Justin

Tell us about an interaction with a patient that had an impact on you.

A patient arrived on my service with a rare tumor that had been misdiagnosed for months. By the time she was admitted to the hospital, she was critically sick. I spent hours at her bedside, caring for her and coordinating the treatment she needed. Throughout the entire process, between bouts of tears, she kept looking at me and saying over and over again, “I trust you. I know that I’m in the right place and that you’re doing good work.” That night, I stayed late to ensure her care went as smoothly as possible. The next morning, when I got to her room, she was all smiles, with her family by her side. It was an honor to be there for her on one of the most important days of her life.

What has shaped your approach to care?

When my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I was scared. What was his prognosis? What would his care plan be? Who would manage his care? Would I be able to go to his appointments? Even though I had been treating patients with cancer for years, I still felt powerless and uncertain. I try to remember those feelings whenever I meet new patients and families. Providing a sense of safety and understanding is so important in my line of work; even the best medicine needs a human element. I strive to take time to answer questions, listen to fears, provide guidance and be with patients every step of the way — just like I wanted for my dad.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
