Gynecologic Oncology

“I have a real passion and love for women’s health care, but also for surgery, cancer treatment and research.”

— Dr. Fleming

Why did you choose your specialty?

I’m a gynecologic oncologist. It’s a unique specialty because we are both a surgical and a medical oncologist all in one. For patients with gynecologic cancers, we see and treat them from beginning to end. In medical training, it’s a very comprehensive specialty. You really do develop a deep relationship with the patient as you see them throughout the continuum of care, which is extremely rewarding and challenging at the same time.

What kind of experience do you want your patients to have working with you?

I always try to develop a very meaningful relationship not only with the patient, but also their family, caregivers or other supporters that play a key role in the patient’s care. What's very important to me is for a patient to have a deep understanding of their diagnosis and what the treatment options are. The patient needs to be involved in every step of decision making. I never want a patient to leave my office saying I don't know really what I have, what the next step in the plan is or what my options are.  A patient centered approach to care is very important.
