Edus H. Warren, MD, PhD
Program Head, Global Oncology
Dr. Edus H. Warren, who assumed leadership of the Global Oncology program in July 2017, is an oncologist specializing in the treatment of patients with blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Warren is a professor, Program in Immunology, Clinical Research Division and a professor, Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division at Fred Hutch. Further, he is an attending physician at Fred Hutch, where he serves on the Hematology/Hematologic Malignancy Service.
Warren invests in basic and translational research that will lead to innovative strategies for adapting the advances in cancer research, prevention, diagnosis and treatment made in high-income countries to help address the increasing burden of cancer morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries.
Warren Phipps, MD, MPH
Deputy Director, Global Oncology & Medical Director, Uganda Cancer Institute-Fred Hutch Collaboration
Dr. Warren Phipps is an associate professor in the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division and an attending physician, Infectious Disease Consulting Service within the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division at Fred Hutch. For more than 10 years, he has served as the medical director of the Uganda Cancer Institute-Fred Hutch Collaboration in Kampala, Uganda. He also serves as the director of faculty development for the collaboration and oversees a novel peer mentoring program for early-career investigators in Uganda. In July 2023, he was also appointed as the Deputy Director of Global Oncology.
Phipps conducts research on infection-related cancers in sub-Saharan Africa. His research focuses on human herpesvirus-8 virology and the pathogenesis of Kaposi sarcoma. Specific areas of investigation include identifying factors associated with Kaposi sarcoma presentation and treatment outcomes, as well as characterizing host and viral gene expression in Kaposi sarcoma tumors.
Manoj Menon, MD
Associate Professor, Vaccine and Infectious Disease and Clinical Research Divisions
Dr. Manoj Menon researches HIV-associated malignancies as well as cancer characteristics, diagnostics, and treatment in low-income settings. He has documented that in Uganda, patients with both cancer and HIV present to the Uganda Cancer Institute at an earlier stage of disease. The finding affirmed his interest in using the clinical and research infrastructure used in the care of patients with HIV to increase cancer screening and referral. Menon also studies breast cancer in Uganda, including assessing the molecular profile of the disease as well as evaluating novel and clinically relevant diagnostic and therapeutic options for patients. In addition to his work with Global Oncology, he serves as the Program Director of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship, University of Washington.
Stuart Tenney
Senior Director, Finance and Operations
Stuart Tenney joined Fred Hutch's Shared Resources in January 2020 as the senior operations manager to oversee an expanding administrative, operational and informational technology team and ensure cores have the support they need to run stable business operations. Previously, Tenney was a program operations director in the Fred Hutch Clinical Research Division for 10 years with dynamic and diverse management experience overseeing several different science areas. Tenney is hands-on and committed to delivering clear direction and an organized financial outlook for Shared Resources and partnering with the scientific leadership in Research Administration.
In August 2022, Tenney became the Senior Director of Finance and Operations, Research Administration, which oversees Global Oncology. He supports the administrative and research support teams in Kampala, Uganda, and in Seattle.
