How to Include Shared Resources in a Grant
Learn how to include information about Shared Resources in various types of grant applications and find a general description of Fred Hutch Shared Resources. You can copy and paste the content needed into the appropriate section of your grant.
Links to descriptions of specific cores and their services and instruments are below on this page.
Shared Resources information is generally listed on the budget page under "Other Expenses" and justified in the corresponding section of the budget justification. In addition, some investigators may list information about Shared Resources on the resource page when describing their scientific environment.
Shared Resources information is listed on the "Research & Related Budget" form within the Adobe package. Note: "Section F. Other Direct Costs" includes subcategories such as "Materials & Supplies," "Consultant Services," "Subaward Costs," etc. In addition, Shared Resources may be listed under the "Facilities and Other Resources" section, which is uploaded as a PDF on the "Research & Related Other Project Information" form.
Please contact your Office of Sponsored Research federal or non-federal sponsored research officer for information on how to represent Shared Resources on proposals to agencies other than the National Institutes of Health. Be prepared to provide the request for applications or application guidelines that you are working from, as well as any budget information that you have ready. The Fred Hutch Office of Sponsored Research will work with Shared Resources as necessary to help determine how the proposal should be prepared.
Shared Resources at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center consists of cores available for use by Fred Hutch and Cancer Consortium Partner Institution investigators and the external academic and biotechnology community. These cores support basic scientific research, clinical research and public health sciences. Centralized facilities have proven to improve clinical trials' feasibility and efficiency and permit more rapid translation of laboratory studies into clinical applications.
The cores serve the purpose of providing routine services for various research activities, many of which are also focal points for technology dissemination and collaborative research. All shared resources are staffed by personnel with expertise specific to that core. The cores allow investigators to augment their research with resources that would not otherwise be convenient or cost-effective in each laboratory.
Shared Resources cores provide ongoing support for consultation on experimental design, approaches to troubleshooting, and assistance with data quality and analysis issues. Also, training is provided to core users in various formats, including in one-on-one, small-group, online or class formats. These include courses on using specific instruments, analysis of data and best use of services.
