A Spirit of Collaboration Over Competition
From our creation nearly 50 years ago, Fred Hutch Cancer Center has fostered a supportive and cooperative environment centered around our shared mission of advancing breakthroughs and saving lives. As one of the leading cancer and infectious disease research institutions in the world, Fred Hutch is an exciting place to grow your career alongside other experts in their fields.
Fred Hutch team members work side by side in our world-class research facilities, which are built to promote cross-disciplinary collaboration. Together, our researchers are making breakthroughs in cancer prevention and early detection, discovering new factors in disease risk, occurrence and progression, and building on our understanding of HIV and other diseases.
Broad Range of Scientific Disciplines
More than 300 faculty in seven scientific divisions continually generate new discoveries and translate them into effective medical practices, therapeutic strategies and public health approaches. Efforts are not isolated within divisions; rather, constant collaboration feeds new ideas and innovative discoveries. This cooperative approach is achieved through informal activities as well as through integrated research centers, institutions and networks.
Evolutionary biologists exploring the competition between genes and proteins that drives evolutionary change, physician-scientists treating patients, public health experts identifying strategies to reduce the incidence of and mortality from cancer and other diseases and many others collaborate each day to tackle scientific problems. They also collaborate in our on-campus cafes and socialize during a weekly beer hour on Friday afternoons.
State of the Art Facilities and Campus
Our waterfront campus welcomes researchers, scientists and doctors with incredible city and mountain views, but it’s what happens indoors that is truly breathtaking. Discover more than 250,000 square feet of world-class laboratory space powered by nimble information technology and data science infrastructure and dedicated teams of specialized support staff.
Research facilities on our campus include the labs of principal investigators as well as high-tech core facilities available to all scientists. We recently expanded into the historic Lake Union Steam Plant building, which houses 60,000 square feet of high-tech research space, supporting experimental design, data generation, analysis and cross-disciplinary interaction.
Resources, Education & Training and Administrative Support
Fred Hutch is among the top National Institutes of Health– and National Cancer Institute–funded academic and research institutions in the U.S. Because competition for federal research grants is intense, and the implementation of complex, multiyear grants requires a great deal of organizational rigor, we take pride in this achievement. We take equal pride in our record of support from private funders, whose investment in early-stage work is critical to securing federal grants.
Fred Hutch offers a wide range of training opportunities for post-baccalaureate and graduate students, including a University of Washington/Fred Hutch jointly administered PhD program in molecular and cellular biology. Students also can participate in dual degree graduate programs. Additionally, postdoctoral fellows are found in all our research divisions and they receive stipends/salaries in accordance with the Washington state minimum exempt wage.
